This summer, one trending debate for the nutrition-conscious is the competition between Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, and which packs the bigger protein punch. For younger-spirited palates that aren’t hungry for either pungent protein, there are options, too. For example, Danone, the biggest dairy manufacturer in the country and maker of Activia, Light + Fit, Oikos, and Dannon, also makes a candy-crunch line of yogurt products that are a little more like dessert.

But before you pack that lunchbox for camp, a Monday press release states that Danone U.S. has initiated a nationwide recall of “all flavors and sizes of YoCrunch products currently in-market.” The company says that it’s working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to pull affected products from store shelves.

The voluntary recall is due to the potential presence of plastic pieces in the products’ dome toppers, which the company says “could potentially cause a choking response.” As the company’s release details: “The plastic pieces are transparent, may have sharp edges, and could present a risk to consumers because some pieces are between 7 and 25 [millimeters] in length.” That’s quite small and could be easy for a hungry or distracted eater to miss. Some G.I. experts might add that perforation of the digestive lining could also be a concern.

Worth noting is that the press release specifies that the issue is “isolated only to the separately packaged topper and does not impact the separately packaged yogurt.”

Danone shared the following information about the recall, affecting a total of 17 types of yogurt:

In a recall announcement on its website, Danone advises consumers not to eat the affected products and urges customers to contact the YoCrunch Consumer Care Line for information on refunds at 1-877-344-4886.

Over the weekend, Northeastern grocery chain Wegmans also announced the recall on its own website, though it only lists six flavors that are affected: Strawberry M&M, M&M Vanilla, Cookies n’ Cream, Vanilla with Oreo Pieces, Vanilla Oreo & M&M, and Vanilla with Milk Chocolate M&Ms.

The Wegmans announcement encourages consumers to return the recalled products to a customer service desk for a full refund.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a recall from Danone. Last year, the company conducted a more targeted recall of YoCrunch Vanilla Lowfat Yogurt with M&Ms for containing “undeclared wheat.” More recently, over 75,000 bottles of coffee creamer from International Delight, another brand owned by Danone, were recalled earlier this year due to “complaints of spoilage.”
