During these hot and humid summer months, it’s crucial to stay hydrated. However, only around half of Americans are drinking the recommended amount of water each day, according to a 2023 CivicScience poll.

Women should typically drink 9 cups of fluid a day, advises the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, while men should consume around 13 cups. For many, an easy way to meet these numbers is keeping a reusable water bottle close by throughout the day. But before you fill up your stainless steel bottle, check to see if it’s a part of a new recall from a major retailer.

On Thursday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that around 850,000 Ozark Trail stainless steel insulated water bottles, in the 64-ounce size, are being recalled by Walmart nationwide.

According to the notice, the bottle’s lid is potentially hazardous. The CPSC stated, “The lid can forcefully eject, posing serious impact and laceration hazards, when a consumer attempts to open the capped bottles after food, carbonated beverages or perishable beverages, such as juice or milk, are stored inside over time.”

The CPSC says there have been injuries—there are currently three reports of the bottles’ lids injuring consumers’ faces, and in two of those cases, the injuries were significant. The report shares, “Two consumers suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye.”

The recalled bottles were sold exclusively at Walmart locations nationwide and on Walmart.com since 2017, and they are said to cost around $15.

The CPSC shared the following product details:

  • Product name: Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles
  • Model number: 83-662 (found on the product’s packaging, not the product)
  • Appearance: Bottles are silver with a black one-piece screwcap lid and feature an Ozark Trail logo embedded on its side.
  • Size: 4.41 x 4.41 x 11.5 inches
  • Manufactured in: China

The announcement lists the product importers as Olympia Tools International Inc., of Covina, California and Walmart Inc., of Bentonville, Arkansas. While Walmart is a well-known retailer, consumers may be less familiar with Olympia Tools International. According to its website, Olympia Tools is a global manufacturer that distributes “hand tools, specialty tools, tool accessories and outdoor equipment” to stores worldwide. It also manufactures water bottles, tumblers, and mugs.

The CPSC urges consumers to stop using the bottles immediately and to return them to the nearest Walmart location to receive a full refund.
